TMJ Massage Therapy
TMJ Massage Therapy is a focused treatment that is centred around working the musculature or the jaw, as well as releasing muscles tension through the neck and shoulders. TMJ stands for temporomadibular joint. This type of treatment can be very helpful for those who tend to clench their jaw, grind their teeth, experience headaches, have general neck/shoulder muscle tension, experience sinus pressure, have decreased jaw mobility and experience popping or clicking.
There are typically two approaches of treatment, externally or internally. External massage will be applied to the outside of the jaw, targeting muscles such as temporalis and masseter. Before each treatment, the RMT and patient will discuss their treatment options and will only work on areas that are agreed upon/are indicated.
If working internally (intra-oral), treatment involves your RMT wearing gloves and gently targeting deep muscles such as masseter, temporalis, medial and lateral pterygoid. Before each treatment, the RMT and patient will discuss their treatment options and will only work on areas that are agreed upon/are indicated.
